Species description: Stems 30-80(-100) cm, erect, glabrous. B asal and lower cauline leaves usually ovate, deeply cordate, obtuse, 1- to 2-vrenate to serrate, long petiolate; basal leaves present at anthesis. Inflorescence dense, at first ovoid to more or less globose, later up to 6(-20) cm, cylindrical. Bracts .inear, usually not longer than the width of the inflorescence, more or less conspicious. Corolla somewhat curved in but. Stigma 2.

Ssp spicatum: Flowers whitish to pale yellowish-green. Style yellow to yelowish-brown. Throughout the range of the species.

Ssp coeruleum: Flowers bluish; Stigmas yelowish-brown to blue. S.C.Europe and N. part of Balkan peninsula.
